Thomas Whittle established Slide Night in 2012 as a way of animating a large collection of 35mm slides saved from a closing museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. Slide Night takes the formal shape of a traditional slide talk, this one structure acting as a gimcrack portmanteau, within which function a series of diverse and disconnected movements, tangents and dead ends.

Artists are invited to produce a live presentation, the only rule being there must be at least one 35mm slide shown. Presentations have included live music, slide show talks, fiction, non-fiction and choreography.

Slide Night has included artists Tom Smith, Paul Becker, Tess Denman Cleaver, Kate Liston, Rene McBrearty, Aaron Guy, Thomas Whittle, Mira Calix, Mark Bleakley, Claricia Kruithof, Totaller, Mark Essen, Catharine Payton, Astrid Newman, Peter Martin, Lucy Vann, Dave Sherry, Susie Green, Ben Sanderson, Chris Alton, Frances Disley, Jamie Sorensen, Linny Venables, Edwin Li, Ilker Cinarel, Frederica Agbah, Lucy Steggals, Tyler Mallison, Laura Wilson, Mike Harvey, Patrick Cole, Jessica Yu and Kevin Hunt.

Slide Night has happened at Rhubaba (Edinburgh),
The Northern Charter (Newcastle), S1 Artspace (Shefield), The NewBridge Project (Newcastle),
Basic Mountain (Edinburgh), Wysing Arts Centre (Cambridge) and CBS Gallery (Liverpool).
